No one can really change our lives except ourselves. We have been given great power, great personal power. The power to change our lives if we truly believe we must change our lives.
Too many of us believe the power to change lies in changing our circumstances. And while changing our circumstances may be critical to our growth, if we change the circumstances without changing how we think and feel and act, we will find over time our circumstances will become just like they were before. In a cult film from the 80’s Buckaroo Bonsai said, “Wherever you go, there you are.” So true. What if changing anything and everything was about believing at the deepest level that change is possible. What if the secret to change was the belief system surrounding our choices, our thoughts, our feelings and our actions. What if it all came down to the soulful desire to tell a different story with our lives.
Ask yourself, is this the story of my life? Is this how I want the most precious of all gifts, the gift of human existence to go like this? You can start by examining the story of your life and ask yourself the most critical question, is this what I want? Author and speaker John DeMartini said each one of us always has the time, money and energy to do that which is most important to us. When I heard him speak this words years ago I believed him, and then watched how people, myself included made choices, pursued goals and ultimately had what they wanted. But it all begins with decided what is most important to us.
Wherever you go, there you are.
Buckaroo Bonsai
A great exercise is to write a paragraph describing yourself as you want someone who loves and respects you to write about you. Once you have written this paragraph, ask yourself if the choices you are making line up with the person you described.
Go one step further and write a one page essay describing this person’s life. Does this match with the life you are currently living?
The power to change is within.
If we blame others, or attempt to work on our relationships through a desire to change someone else we are missing a great opportunity to change ourselves. We teach others how to treat us, so if we want our relationship to change we have to change ourselves and in doing so we will attract the people and experiences that support this person we have become.
God wants us to be the best version of ourselves. If we work on ourselves and pursue our own growth, the Universe will support us in ways we cannot possible imagine. The change is up to us. The change is ours to take.
